Matthew Environment Center serves as a centre for learning eco restoration of dry deciduous forest and educate for all to understand native shrubs, creepers and trees through Reuben Arboretum and Butterfly Garden and buy shrubs , creepers and tree seedlings

Location : Entrance to Law’s Ghat Road at the foothills , in Madurai District ,

Altitude : 288 metres above sea level

Area :    8 ha (divided equally by the road leading up the hill )

History : land for creating a centre obtained during the year 1991 whence it was over grazed and severely eroded , after formation of contour bunds and retaining soil for the last 26 years , the vegetation of the adjacent hillocks and fauna are making a comeback.

Water source : Two borewells of  50 and 100 metre depth each with reasonable amount of water for the nurseries

Facilities: A dormitory for the visitors and a centre building with space for 20 persons . Appropriate for conducting workshops on natural resource management issues facing Palni Hills in particular and Western Ghats in general.

Butterfly garden:
Spread over an area of two acres , grows larval host plants , nectar plants and alkaloid plants for three families of butterflies, Pappilionidae, Nympalidae and Danaidae so visitors are able to see the winged beauties all through the year.

Reuben Arboretum:
Planted with over 100 species of native trees, has now about 70 species that are thriving for visitors to learn about performance of  native trees in plantations , has some good specimens of Precious woods like Pterocarpus santalinus and Diospyros ebenum.

Nursery : Has a stock of over sixty varieties of tree seedlings, shrubs for butterfly larvae
and creepers and  herbs with medicinal properties.
