The
Town

Kodaikanal - One of the most beautiful Hill Towns in India is situated in the Palni Hills. It is an important eco-tourist spot but at the same time threatened by two potential issues - the Eutrophication of the lake and the Pollution by tourists. | |||
The
Lake![]() |
Situated at Kodaikanal town at 2200 mts, the Lake, though man-made is the source of drinking water to many towns including the pilgrim town of Palni, in the plains. The lake has a water spread area of 22 ha and is fed by natural springs that drain through marsh. The watershed is being disturbed by construction activity. And due to siltation, the lake is also losing depth. The average depth of 6 mts as compared to 9 mts in sixties today is due to silting up at a very fast rate. The lake is eutrophying fast and algal blooms and fish deaths are becoming common. Spread of macrovegetation is evident and 25% of the lake area is covered with Water Lilly - Nymphaea nouchali. The council has been campaigning for preventing the pollution that is entering the lake by subterranean drainage from hotels and restaurants built on the lake watershed. The council conducts a Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring programme for educating School Students of Kodaikanal about water quality and reasons for the eutrophication of the lake. We need help in purchase of equipment for quicker water analysis. Our studies indicate that the oxygen levels are sometime as low as 4mg per litre. The oxygen level reaches the maximum during the monsoon rains of October- November, when it is about 11mg per litre. Biological methods of monitoring based on bioindicators is being given priority as opposed to physical and chemical analysis. The Council is evolving an index for river purity based on macrobiological insects like Stoneflies; Caddis flies; Dobson flies. |

Save
Kodaikanal from sinking into garbage
Welcome to Kodaikanal but do not leave behind a mountain of plastic waste Going around the lake on bicycles and walking around is fun but filling it up with empty soft drink cans and plastic bottles is unwarranted Enjoy the lake with sugar candy but do not throw the plastic packet into the waters Take a hard ride on a pony but beware the horses contribute 300 kg of manure a day to the lake waters !! Stay in a hotel that is not in the Lake Watershed and doesn't pollute it Wherever you stay, ask if the lodge is treating its solid and liquid wastes!!! Question the source of water that you get at your hotel - make sure it is not from the lake - it is too polluted for human use. Berijam, Suicide point, Golf Course and Pillar Rocks are not dumping yards for your food packets |
